RARE EDITION OF CLEVELEY AQUATINTS

James Cleveley was a ships carpenter on the James Cook expedition. He made drawings at the scene then had them made into aquatints by his brother John, a famous marine artist. For full details about these please refer to our main 2000 catalogue.

The following are very rare French editions, which have the title and descriptions added to lower border (unlike the English which had none). Each has a small repair to titled margins. Collector items.

EXCEPTIONAL SERIES OF RARE VIEWS

(PACIFIC ISLANDS) Collection from the important first voyage of DUMONT D'URVILLE around the world in the vessel Astrolable, 1826-9, Voyage Au Pole Sud Et Dans L'Oceanie, published Paris c.1830. Sailed from Toulon in 1826, went via Cape Horn to Australia and northern island of New Zealand. Then visited Tonga, Fiji and other Pacific islands before returning to New Guinea and Australia by end of 1827. The following selection of stone lithographs are of the highest quality and are becoming very scarce. Uncoloured as issued, folio (printed area 14"x10") plus margins.
